The USDA has approved an agricultural disaster designation for 31 counties in NY, including Cayuga County, after a frost event in May which caused significant crop destruction. Farms that lost at least 30% of their crop are eligible for low-interest emergency loans of up to $500,000. According to an article published today in The Citizen, a number of farms across the county lost more than 30% of their apple, cherry, grape, and peach crops. Farmers affected by this agricultural disaster have eight months to apply for emergency loans and should reach out to the Farm Service Agency’s Cayuga office. Looking to learn more? The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets will host an industry-wide webinar on September 13th to guide farm wineries through the application process.
